How many leveling clips for 12×24 tile?
About 3 clips per 12×24 tile (two on the long edge, one on the short), which works out to roughly 1.5 clips per square foot. A 40 sq ft bathroom floor needs about 66 clips, one pack of 100, once you add 10% for cuts. If you clip closer on thin tile, plan on more.
Clip counts by room (12×24, straight lay)
A clip at least every 12 inches along each joint, plus 10% for cuts and edges. Wedges are reusable, so the wedge count is capped at about a day's work.
| Room | Area | Clips | Packs of 100 | Wedges |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small bathroom | 40 sq ft | 66 | 1 | 66 |
| Ensuite | 70 sq ft | 116 | 2 | 116 |
| Kitchen | 150 sq ft | 248 | 3 | 248 |
| Open main floor | 400 sq ft | 660 | 7 | 500 |
| Basement | 800 sq ft | 1320 | 14 | 500 |
Offset and brick layouts
12×24 is often laid in an offset. Keep the offset to a third of the tile length or less: most 12×24 porcelain has a slight bow in the middle, and a half offset puts the high centre next to a low end. Offset doesn't change the clip count much, but clip both long edges well.
Which clip size for 12×24?
Rectified 12×24 porcelain usually takes a 1.5 mm clip (1/16" joint) or a 2.0 mm clip. Pressed-edge 12×24 usually takes 3.0 mm (1/8"). See the clip size guide.
Frequently asked questions
How many leveling clips per 12×24 tile?
Three: two along the 24" edge and one along the 12" edge, with a clip at least every 12 inches. The neighbouring tiles cover the other edges.
How many leveling clips per square foot for 12×24 tile?
About 1.5 per square foot at 12-inch spacing, before the 10% allowance for cuts.
What offset should I use for 12×24 tile?
A third of the tile length or less is the usual guidance for long tile, unless the tile maker says otherwise. It keeps the bowed centre of one tile away from the ends of the next.
