How many clips and wedges should a crew keep on hand?
Plan clips by the square feet you lay and wedges by one day's work. Clips stay in the floor, so you need about 1.5 per sq ft for 12×24 tile and about 1 per sq ft for 24×24, plus 10% for cuts. Wedges come back out and are reused, so you only need as many as go into one day's floor. A crew laying 300 sq ft of 12×24 a day uses about 500 clips a day and needs about 450 wedges in total.
Per day, 12×24 tile
Straight lay, a clip at least every 12 inches, 10% added for cuts. Packs of 100.
| Pace | Clips used | Clip packs | Wedges to own | Wedge packs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 150 sq ft a day | 248 | 3 | 225 | 3 |
| 300 sq ft a day | 496 | 5 | 450 | 5 |
| 500 sq ft a day | 826 | 9 | 750 | 8 |
Per day, 24×24 tile
| Pace | Clips used | Clip packs | Wedges to own | Wedge packs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 150 sq ft a day | 168 | 2 | 152 | 2 |
| 300 sq ft a day | 330 | 4 | 300 | 3 |
| 500 sq ft a day | 550 | 6 | 500 | 5 |
Clip thin or very large tile closer, every 8 inches, and plan on about half as many clips again. The calculator does this under More options.
Stocking the truck
- Keep at least two days of clips in the width you use most, so a big floor never stops mid-job.
- Own one day's worth of wedges, plus a pack spare for the ones that crack or go missing.
- Carry a second clip width if you lay both rectified and pressed-edge tile. See which clip size.
- Restock clips in bulk: 1,000-clip and 2,000-clip boxes cost less per clip than single packs.
