Can you use leveling clips over heated floors?
Yes. Leveling clips sit in the thinset between the tiles, above the heating cable or membrane, so they work the same as on any floor. Embed the cables fully in mortar first, use the trowel and mortar the heating system's maker specifies, and knock the clips off along the joint so nothing digs into the floor. Don't switch the heat on until the mortar and grout have cured; follow the heating system's instructions.
Setting tile over floor heating
- Test the heating. Check the cable's resistance before, during and after tiling, as the heating maker asks.
- Cover the cables. Embed the cables or membrane fully in mortar, so the tile sits on a flat bed, not on bumps.
- Set and clip. Bed each tile and clip every edge at least every 12 inches, as on any floor. The clip base sits in the mortar above the cables.
- Knock clips off carefully. Strike along the joint with a rubber mallet once the mortar has cured. Don't pry clip pieces out with metal tools near the cables.
- Wait before heating. Leave the heat off until the mortar and grout have cured, as long as the heating system's instructions say.
Why heated floors show lippage
Cables add a layer under the tile. If they aren't fully embedded and flat, tiles rock on the high spots and edges end up uneven. Clips hold neighbouring edges flush while the mortar cures, but a flat bed under the tile matters most. See what causes lippage.
Frequently asked questions
Do leveling clips damage heating cables?
Not when the cables are fully embedded in mortar below the tile and the clips are knocked off along the joint. Avoid prying clip pieces out with metal tools near the floor.
When can I turn on a heated tile floor?
Only after the mortar and grout have cured. Follow the heating system's instructions for the exact wait.
